He had lost 47 pounds, in addition to muscle tone and strength.
At Augusta Place, he rebounded through occupational, physical and speech therapies.
Watch the video below to find out more about Tom's recovery.
"I can't tell you how absolutely excellent my stay has been," Tom says of his six weeks at Augusta Place.
The goal of each therapy was to help him:
Walk with confidence and maintain balance (occupational therapy)
Develop muscle strength (physical therapy)
Improve his ability to swallow (speech therapy)
"I wanted to feel normal again. It was personal," he says. "I didn't want nobody or need anybody's assistance, even though I was seeing them five days a week."
Now, Tom is walking stronger and more smoothly as he looks forward to returning home.
He is grateful to Augusta Place employees for their positive attitudes and commitment to his physical improvement.
"When I complete my occupational, physical and speech therapy, it will be kind of a sad day because I enjoy it here," he says.
